COMPASS case study visit in La Rochelle, France

A research visit was carried out by Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), member of COMPASS team, to the areas affected by the Xynthia storm surge, in and around La Rochelle, France from 29 August to 7 September 2024. During the visit, apart from inspecting adaptation measures created since the disasters, meetings were held with local experts, including city authorities and La Rochelle University’s coastal research unit.

Trees painted blue to remind people of the water level reached during Xynthia and the near-term threat of sea level rise (thin blue line above). This part of La Rochelle was inundated in 2010. Created by local authorities as part of World Ocean Day in 2024. Photographed during a research visit from PIK to the affected areas from 29 August to 7 September 2024.
