SUMMARY:EGU26 General Assembly - Sessions organized by COMPASS team members
DESCRIPTION:The European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2026 is one of the largest international conferences in the geosciences\, bringing together thousands of researchers from across the world to present and discuss the latest advances in Earth\, climate and environmental sciences. The annual meeting provides an important platform for interdisciplinary exchange and science–policy dialogue. \nDr. Dominik Paprotny (COMPASS partner) is convening a dedicated session at the upcoming European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2026: \nSession title: Space-time dynamics of flood risk: processes\, controls\, and attributionSession code: HS2.4.6Session type: PICO (Presenting Interactive COntent) \nThis session explores the complex spatial and temporal patterns of flood risk\, highlighting key processes\, controlling factors\, and methods for flood risk attribution. It has been well-attended in recent years and brings together researchers working on flood hazard\, impacts\, adaptation and attribution to share novel findings in an interactive poster format. \n📅 Abstract submission deadline: 15 January 2026🔗 Session details & submission: https://www.egu26.eu/session/55915

SUMMARY:EMS Annual Meeting 2026 - Session organized by COMPASS team members
DESCRIPTION:The upcoming EMS Annual Meeting 2026 will take place in Utrecht\, bringing together researchers and practitioners from across the meteorological and climate science communities. \nA session titled “Attribution of Extreme Weather Events and Their Impacts” will be convened by COMPASS team members and collaborators. The session focuses on recent advances in extreme event attribution (EEA) and the growing body of research linking extreme weather events — such as heatwaves\, wildfires\, droughts\, floods\, and hurricanes — to climate change and other human-driven factors. \nAs climate change increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events\, understanding their drivers and impacts has become increasingly important. In addition to climatic influences\, human activities have altered land use\, hydrology\, and exposure patterns\, further shaping the impacts of these events on human health\, infrastructure\, and ecosystems. \nIn recent decades\, EEA has expanded rapidly\, with new methodologies enabling the attribution not only of extreme weather events themselves but also of their impacts\, including fatalities\, damages\, and displacement. Attribution research supports a wide range of societal applications\, including awareness-raising\, litigation\, the Loss and Damage mechanism\, decision-making\, and adaptation planning. \nSession scope\nThe session welcomes contributions that explore different methods to attribute weather extremes and their impacts to various drivers\, including climate change\, land-use change\, and adaptation. Topics of interest include: \n\nComparison of different attribution methods\nDevelopment of new attribution methodologies\nAttribution of extreme weather events\nAttribution of impacts of extreme events\nApplications of attribution studies for societal purposes\n\nAbstract submission opens on 2 February 2026. \nResearchers working on attribution science and its societal applications are encouraged to submit their contributions.

SUMMARY:COMPASS Final Conference announcement - Save the Date
DESCRIPTION:“Advancing Impact Attribution – from Science to Practice”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10-11th February 2027\, Delft\, Netherlands\n\n\n\n\nThe COMPASS Final Conference brings together researchers\, practitioners\, climate service providers\, policymakers and other stakeholders to explore the latest advances in the attribution of compound extreme events and their societal impacts – and how this science can be translated into climate services\, risk communication and decision-making. \nThe conference will showcase scientific developments in attribution methods\, hazard and impact modelling\, datasets and workflows\, while also addressing how attribution science can support climate services\, risk communication and decision-making. \n\nTwo days –  From scientific advancements to operational use\nDay 1 : Impact attribution –  recent and ongoing scientific developments \nHow can advances in attribution science improve our understanding of complex and compound extreme events and their societal impacts? \nTopics include: \n\nHow can we attribute complex\, compound and cascading extreme events?\nWhat are the strengths and limitations of existing attribution approaches?\nHow can we move from hazard attribution to impact attribution?\nWhich developments in hazard modelling\, impact modelling\, datasets and workflows are needed to support impact attribution?\nWhat are the key scientific challenges and research gaps that remain?\n\nDay 2 : Impact attribution operationalisation and communication – from science to practice \nHow can attribution science be translated into actionable information for climate services\, risk management and decision-making? \nTopics include: \n\nWhat does it take to operationalise impact attribution?\nWhat are the requirements\, opportunities and limitations of impact attribution as a climate service?\nHow can attribution results be communicated as actionable risk information?\nWhat information do users and decision-makers need from attribution studies?\nHow can scientific advances be translated into practical tools\, services and decision support?\n\n\nCONNECT • EXCHANGE • EXPLORE\nThrough presentations\, posters\, demonstrations and interactive discussions\, participants will exchange knowledge\, share experiences and explore future pathways for advancing and operationalising impact attribution. \n\nConference programme and registration information will follow. Download the Conference Leaflet \nParticipation is free of charge. No registration fees are required for either in-person or online attendance. \nJoin us in Delft to help shape the next steps for impact attribution — from advancing the science to putting it into practice.
