DESCRIPTION:Each year\, AGU’s annual meeting\, the largest gathering of Earth and space scientists\, convenes 25\,000+ attendees from 100+ countries to share research and connect with friends and colleagues. DESCRIPTION:The General Assembly 2025 of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) was held at the Austria Center Vienna (ACV) in Vienna\, Austria and online\, from 27 April–2 May 2025. SUMMARY:Living Planet Symposium 2025
DESCRIPTION:Held every three years\, ESA’s Living Planet Symposia are among the world’s premier events on Earth observation. With the climate crisis intensifying\, the Living Planet Symposium 2025 (LPS25) emphasised transitioning from ‘observation to climate action and sustainability for Earth’. \nThe event provided a forum to present and discuss the latest scientific findings and applications based on satellite data\, and to review the contribution that data and technologies have made and could further make in addressing environmental and societal challenges. The symposium showcased innovative products\, services\, missions and initiatives\, with the overarching goal of demonstrating how science\, society\, policy-making\, businesses and the economy can all benefit from observations made from space. \nDuring the five-day event\, diverse communities united by a common interest in exploiting Earth observation data gathered together\, creating a unique opportunity to meet and network with space enthusiasts from a wide range of sectors. \nCOMPASS project was presented with an e-poster at the DG DEFIS stand\, at the screen dedicated to HaDEA Earth Observation-related projects. SUMMARY:Annual Weather and Climate Conference 2025 - Workshop on “Compound Extremes and Cascading Impacts and Risks”
DESCRIPTION:The RMetS Annual Weather and Climate Conference scheduled for 2 – 4 July 2025 at the Manchester Metropolitan University (UK)\, provided a platform for scientists and operational meteorologists working in academia\, public and private sectors to present their work to the weather and climate community\, with dedicated sessions to showcase early career researchers and early career professionals\, alongside RMetS Award winners and keynote speakers. \nIsabel Rushby\, Applied Climate Scientist at Met Office and member of COMPASS team co-chaired a workshop on “Compound Extremes and Cascading Impacts and Risks”\, which was held on the 3rd July. This workshop brought together over 50 cross-disciplinary scientists\, academics and practitioners discussing the challenges and potential solutions to complex climate and hydrological hazards and risk. Breakout groups discussed topics including: \n\nWhat are the key challenges\, knowledge gaps and barriers in understanding and quantifying compound extremes?\nWhat are the latest approaches being used to assess and manage compound extremes and cascading impacts?\nHow can we improve their use in practice and develop adaptive solutions?\n\nAttendees identified a number of challenges\, highlighting the challenges in quantitatively linking hazards to impacts\, and the importance of collaboration between weather/climate experts and other sectors\, as well as across sector collaboration.\n\nAn overview of the COMPASS project was given near the beginning of the workshop\, introducing the project to a wide audience. This covered the goals of the project and the partners involved.

DESCRIPTION:EuroGEO is the regional coordination mechanism that aims to consolidate and coordinate activities throughout Europe that contribute to GEO (Group on Earth Observations) initiatives. \nSince EuroGEO’s inception\, the European landscape has significantly changed. Firstly\, at EU level\, with the implementation of the EU Space Programme\, which provides the necessary infrastructure\, data\, and technological advancements\, whilst EuroGEO coordinates and integrates these resources to address global and regional challenges through GEO work programme activities. And secondly\, at GEO level\, with the adoption of the ‘post-2025’ GEO work programme\, which shifts from “Earth observation” to “Earth Intelligence” and from a focus on services to equity\, in order to bridge the global information gaps. \nΤhis year’s EuroGEO workshop\, which will take place in Hague\, Netherlands from 13 to 15 October\, is jointly organized by the European Commission\, the EuroGEO Secretariat and the Netherlands Space Office. This year\, inspired by the “Connections” and “New Orleans Science” themes from the brainstorm\, our incredible design team took those concepts\, as well as a 1944 US Army Corps of Engineers report\, “The Nature and Origin of the Alluvial Valley of the Lower Mississippi River” which visualized how it had evolved over time. They traced the the lower Mississippi River to digitize its path. The squiggles you see on signage throughout the meeting is the digitization of this mighty river that has served as a connection point for millions of people throughout this region\, and continues to connect communities and people today. As rivers are points of connection\, science is as well. Thus this year’s theme: Where Science Connects Us. \nDr. Dominik Paprotny\, researcher at Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) – University of Szczecin (US) and member of COMPASS team\, presented the COMPASS project with an invited talk entitled “Improving direct human forcing for CMIP7 earth system modelling and ISIMIP4 climate impact attribution“\, on Wednesday 17 December 2025 betweeen 14:15 – 14:25 . \nAlso\, the team of the University of Szczecin (US)\, will present a poster entitled “Automated Workflow for Climate Data Processing and Impact Attribution Using CDS and EU-Supported Datasets“\, on Wednesday 17 December 2025 betweeen 14:15 – 17:45.

DESCRIPTION:The upcoming EMS Annual Meeting 2026 will take place in Utrecht\, bringing together researchers and practitioners from across the meteorological and climate science communities. \nA session titled “Attribution of Extreme Weather Events and Their Impacts” will be convened by COMPASS team members and collaborators. The session focuses on recent advances in extreme event attribution (EEA) and the growing body of research linking extreme weather events — such as heatwaves\, wildfires\, droughts\, floods\, and hurricanes — to climate change and other human-driven factors. \nAs climate change increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events\, understanding their drivers and impacts has become increasingly important. In addition to climatic influences\, human activities have altered land use\, hydrology\, and exposure patterns\, further shaping the impacts of these events on human health\, infrastructure\, and ecosystems. \nIn recent decades\, EEA has expanded rapidly\, with new methodologies enabling the attribution not only of extreme weather events themselves but also of their impacts\, including fatalities\, damages\, and displacement. Attribution research supports a wide range of societal applications\, including awareness-raising\, litigation\, the Loss and Damage mechanism\, decision-making\, and adaptation planning. \nSession scope\nThe session welcomes contributions that explore different methods to attribute weather extremes and their impacts to various drivers\, including climate change\, land-use change\, and adaptation. Topics of interest include: \n\nComparison of different attribution methods\nDevelopment of new attribution methodologies\nAttribution of extreme weather events\nAttribution of impacts of extreme events\nApplications of attribution studies for societal purposes\n\nAbstract submission opens on 2 February 2026. \nResearchers working on attribution science and its societal applications are encouraged to submit their contributions.
