SUMMARY:AGU25 Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, AGU comes up with a unique theme for the Annual Meeting. It starts as a brainstorm among interested parties\, and then our design team takes themes and common threads from that brainstorm\, and unites it with visuals that we can translate to graphics and signage for the meeting. This year\, inspired by the “Connections” and “New Orleans Science” themes from the brainstorm\, our incredible design team took those concepts\, as well as a 1944 US Army Corps of Engineers report\, “The Nature and Origin of the Alluvial Valley of the Lower Mississippi River” which visualized how it had evolved over time. They traced the the lower Mississippi River to digitize its path. The squiggles you see on signage throughout the meeting is the digitization of this mighty river that has served as a connection point for millions of people throughout this region\, and continues to connect communities and people today. As rivers are points of connection\, science is as well. Thus this year’s theme: Where Science Connects Us. \nDr. Dominik Paprotny\, researcher at Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) – University of Szczecin (US) and member of COMPASS team\, presented the COMPASS project with an invited talk entitled “Improving direct human forcing for CMIP7 earth system modelling and ISIMIP4 climate impact attribution“\, on Wednesday 17 December 2025 betweeen 14:15 – 14:25 . \nAlso\, the team of the University of Szczecin (US)\, will present a poster entitled “Automated Workflow for Climate Data Processing and Impact Attribution Using CDS and EU-Supported Datasets“\, on Wednesday 17 December 2025 betweeen 14:15 – 17:45.

DESCRIPTION:EuroGEO is the regional coordination mechanism that aims to consolidate and coordinate activities throughout Europe that contribute to GEO (Group on Earth Observations) initiatives. \nSince EuroGEO’s inception\, the European landscape has significantly changed. Firstly\, at EU level\, with the implementation of the EU Space Programme\, which provides the necessary infrastructure\, data\, and technological advancements\, whilst EuroGEO coordinates and integrates these resources to address global and regional challenges through GEO work programme activities. And secondly\, at GEO level\, with the adoption of the ‘post-2025’ GEO work programme\, which shifts from “Earth observation” to “Earth Intelligence” and from a focus on services to equity\, in order to bridge the global information gaps. \nΤhis year’s EuroGEO workshop\, which will take place in Hague\, Netherlands from 13 to 15 October\, is jointly organized by the European Commission\, the EuroGEO Secretariat and the Netherlands Space Office. SUMMARY:Annual Weather and Climate Conference 2025 - Workshop on “Compound Extremes and Cascading Impacts and Risks”
DESCRIPTION:The RMetS Annual Weather and Climate Conference scheduled for 2 – 4 July 2025 at the Manchester Metropolitan University (UK)\, provided a platform for scientists and operational meteorologists working in academia\, public and private sectors to present their work to the weather and climate community\, with dedicated sessions to showcase early career researchers and early career professionals\, alongside RMetS Award winners and keynote speakers. \nIsabel Rushby\, Applied Climate Scientist at Met Office and member of COMPASS team co-chaired a workshop on “Compound Extremes and Cascading Impacts and Risks”\, which was held on the 3rd July. This workshop brought together over 50 cross-disciplinary scientists\, academics and practitioners discussing the challenges and potential solutions to complex climate and hydrological hazards and risk. Breakout groups discussed topics including: \n\nWhat are the key challenges\, knowledge gaps and barriers in understanding and quantifying compound extremes?\nWhat are the latest approaches being used to assess and manage compound extremes and cascading impacts?\nHow can we improve their use in practice and develop adaptive solutions?\n\nAttendees identified a number of challenges\, highlighting the challenges in quantitatively linking hazards to impacts\, and the importance of collaboration between weather/climate experts and other sectors\, as well as across sector collaboration.\n\nAn overview of the COMPASS project was given near the beginning of the workshop\, introducing the project to a wide audience. This covered the goals of the project and the partners involved.

SUMMARY:Living Planet Symposium 2025
DESCRIPTION:Held every three years\, ESA’s Living Planet Symposia are among the world’s premier events on Earth observation. With the climate crisis intensifying\, the Living Planet Symposium 2025 (LPS25) emphasised transitioning from ‘observation to climate action and sustainability for Earth’. \nThe event provided a forum to present and discuss the latest scientific findings and applications based on satellite data\, and to review the contribution that data and technologies have made and could further make in addressing environmental and societal challenges. The symposium showcased innovative products\, services\, missions and initiatives\, with the overarching goal of demonstrating how science\, society\, policy-making\, businesses and the economy can all benefit from observations made from space. \nDuring the five-day event\, diverse communities united by a common interest in exploiting Earth observation data gathered together\, creating a unique opportunity to meet and network with space enthusiasts from a wide range of sectors. \nCOMPASS project was presented with an e-poster at the DG DEFIS stand\, at the screen dedicated to HaDEA Earth Observation-related projects. SUMMARY:AGU24 Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, AGU’s annual meeting\, the largest gathering of Earth and space scientists\, convenes 25\,000+ attendees from 100+ countries to share research and connect with friends and colleagues. SUMMARY:INQUIMUS 2024 Workshop on "Climate and Disaster Risk storylines"
DESCRIPTION:Eurac Research have hosted the INQUIMUS 2024 on Climate and Disaster Risk storylines – an approach to embrace complexity of risks and heterogeneity of evidence in risk science\, risk management and risk communication. The event took place between December 4th and December 6th at Eurac Research\, in Bolzano\, Italy. \nWorkshop Theme: In an era marked by increasing climate extremes and intensifying disaster events with cascading impacts and risks throughout environmental and human systems\, the need for risk management approaches that embrace the complexity of risk pathways is more pressing than ever. Climate and disaster risk storylines offer a powerful narrative framework that can foster a comprehensive and holistic understanding of complex risks and improve decision-making processes across diverse sectors and scales. \nThe objectives of the workshop were: \n\nExchange experience on developing and applying climate and disaster risk storylines.\nIllustrate\, how quantitative and qualitative elements and evidence can be integrated through risk storylines.\nDiscuss\, how risk storylines can be extended towards the dynamics of non-climatic risk drivers (exposure\, vulnerabiltiy\, underlying drivers) and social aspects.\nUnderstand to which extend and under which conditions storylines can support risk managers in challenging their current risk management practice and adapting them to future conditions.\nConclude on elements and aspects that constitute a good standard in developing risk storylines.\n\nMartha Marie Vogel\, Technical Adviser at Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre and member of COMPASS team\, presented the COMPASS project with a poster entitled “Climate Risk Storylines for Navigating Uncertainties of Climate Change in Humanitarian Action”. SUMMARY:COMPASS Workshop on "Compound extremes attribution of climate change"
DESCRIPTION:COMPASS partners\, namely the University of Szczecin (US) and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) organised a Workshop on “Compound extremes attribution of climate change” in Poland. The Workshop took place on the 24th of June 2024\, at the Gdynia (Poland) / Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute in Gdynia (Poland) \, and was attended by researchers/ academics and stakeholders/ agencies involved in risk assessment of climate change attribution\, climate attribution of compound extremes and analysis of the related societal impacts. \nDuring the workshop we provided an overview of the COMPASS project\, emphasizing the goal of developing a harmonized\, yet flexible\, methodological framework for climate and impact attribution of various hazard types\, and our aim to move beyond single-driver extremes to address complex events such as compound\, sequences\, and cascading hazards. More details were presented on the operational demonstrator Use Case of Poland connected with compound droughts and heatwaves (UC5). \nThe COMPASS goals and progress were presented by Dr. Paprotny (PIK) and P. Terefenko (US)\, followed by an open discussion. Participants stressed the importance of aligning the project’s outcomes\, to the extent practical\, with official weather and climate products and services in Poland. They acknowledged also the need of increased collaboration between academic bodies and both governmental and local authorities. Finally\, they recommended expanding collaborations to include more stakeholders for enhanced methodological and practical robustness of the planned demonstrator.

DESCRIPTION:Last June\, the COMPASS team participated to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) 7th General assembly in Brussels. This gathering brought together climate experts\, researchers\, data users and policy makers to discuss the latest advancements in climate data and decision-support tools. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 2-day Workshop on “Data-driven hydrology and machine learning algorithms for water management and risk assessment” organized by the STARS4Water and DRHYM (data-driven hybrid hydrological models) projects. \nThe hydrological community has been paying particular attention to the advantages of using machine-learned hydrologic models or model components in the last years. Their aims span over a variety of open opportunities for research and operations in the water sector. From input data processing to model output prediction\, novel techniques have been explored to support a large number of hydrological applications\, such as: forecasting of extreme events (floods and droughts)\, predicting water use patterns and projecting future water demand\, detecting patterns in reservoir management and predicting releases\, regionalizing hydrological model’s parameters over large river basins\, regionalizing groundwater information at the catchment scale. \nThis workshop aims to bring together hydrologists and data-driven experts to explore pathways to bring new data sets and data-driven modelling approaches from hydrologic research to the more practical and operational planning level in river basins. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 2-day Workshop on “Quantifying the Impacts of Climate Change on Socioeconomic Development” organized by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and funded by BMBF through the project “Quantifying the Direct and Indirect Impacts of Climate Extremes (QUIDIC)”. \n  \nThis workshop aims to bring together hydrologists and data-driven experts to explore pathways to bring new data sets and data-driven modelling approaches from hydrologic research to the more practical and operational planning level in river basins. By participating in this workshop\, you will: (1) gain an understanding of differentiable models\, (2) develop hands-on experience building and applying deep learning models for rainfall-runoff modeling\, and (3) get a feeling for the role of architectures and data. Most importantly\, however\, the workshop will provide you with a good foundation for continued exploration of deep learning in environmental applications. \n  \nIn the last decades\, societies around the globe started to feel the intensification of extreme weather events and sea level rise due to anthropogenic global warming. Yet\, we still lack a comprehensive understanding upon the mechanisms through which climate variability and change impacts on societies and economies. Developing a sound understanding of these mechanisms on the household as well as on the macroeconomic level is essential to i) rigorously attribute changes in natural and human systems to climate change\, and ii) assess future changes in socioeconomic risks under a further intensification of climate extremes with global warming. Both are needed for better integrated assessments of climate change related risks and transition risks to human well-being and societal prosperity during the transition towards sustainability. \n  \nThe workshop aims at bringing together leading experts from climate attribution research and climate economics with stakeholders and decision makers from national and international institutions to address the following questions: \n(i) How can we attribute changes in natural and human systems to climate change? How relevant are climate drivers compared to socioeconomic drivers? \n(ii) What are the impacts of climate variability and change on societies and economies? What are the key risks for societies under global warming?
